Clinician's Self-care Retreat

Morocco · February 8 - 15 2020

"Helping those who do the helping." An evidence-based surf-therapy retreat for those in the helping professions.

Overview

This retreat is open to health care professionals: doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists/counsellors, yoga/mindfulness teachers, nurses and recovery coaches.

The goal is to give you the knowledge, tools and practice to deeply impact your life strategies, in a fun, action-based week. Focusing on self-care, burnout and vicarious trauma, this week will provide you with the tools to manage and let go of those aspects of work that might be damaging to you and share and absorb experiences amongst a peer group who will understand your unique work-life circumstances.

To be able to engage in an empathic and understanding manner with deeply depressed or traumatised clients/patients requires a level of resilience, self-awareness and self-care that is often out of reach. It is essential for both our own self-care and our clients that we learn to not only recognise any counter-transferential traumatisation and also prevent its destructive influence responsibly, ethically and proactively.

Among the tools include: a look at building resilience, letting go of therapeutic or relational blocks, preventing dissociation in the face of trauma narrative, and confronting trauma contagion. Resurface will create a safe space to focus attention on our own history of trauma and care-taking, our need to be 'wounded healers', to build our own somatic awareness, and revel in the experience of like minded peers and their hard worn experiences in the helping professions.

Highlights

Surfing

Surfing

This is the core element that underlines and supports everything we do. There is a growing body of research and work that links the practice of surfing to a host of beneficial mental improvements, and it is our love of surfing that has provided the initial impetus to create Resurface.

Psycho-education

Psycho-education

The purpose of these daily interactive workshops and lectures is to explain and frame the basics for each day’s topic. Research shows that education alone has a therapeutic effect and is particularly empowering when part of a holistic program.

Experiential Group Therapy

Experiential Group Therapy

The deep potential impact of these sessions cannot be understated. We see again and again from past testimonies, powerful realisations and revelations unexpectedly happen to most of our clients during those sessions, enabling the ignition of major behavioural changes. While each session will have a volunteer main protagonist enact a scene from their past, enrolling the help of their ‘fellows’ to do so, it is often those witnessing these that will gain the most from the process.

Body Work Groups (Trauma-focused Yoga and mindfulness)

Rest Day - Surf, Food and Culture

Rest Day - Surf, Food and Culture

As well as making new fiends, group bonding and learning therapeutic skills, we hope that you will enjoy tasting much of Moroccan culture. On the mid-week rest day we take a trip up the coast to the fishing village of Imsouane, where there is the option of surfing a world class long-board wave and eating delicious grilled fish for lunch. On the way we see some of the famous Moroccan waves (Boilers, Dracula, Tamri) as well as the Bedouin caves and the illustrious ninja goats.
